Viator is the Tripadvisor group’s tours-and-experiences platform, and in Venice it is especially present in one type of product: boat transfers from the airport and the cruise port. It also sells guided visits around St Mark’s, shared gondola rides and lagoon trips. The main differences from other platforms lie in how it calculates ratings and how it organises cancellation rules.

Who Viator is
Viator, Inc. was founded in 1995 by Rod Cuthbert, according to the release in which Tripadvisor announced the purchase. Tripadvisor acquired it in 2014, and today it is based on the group’s campus in Needham, Massachusetts. Payment may be handled by group companies in London, but the contract is always with Viator, Inc.
Viator acts as the supplier’s agent: the contract for the tour or transfer is between you and the local operator, named on the listing. The platform collects payment on the supplier’s behalf, and the supplier pays it a commission after the experience.
What it sells in Venice
- Boat transfers: a search for the airport water taxi returned more than 200 results. Nearly all are private, per-group transfers; the only truly shared one is Bucintoro Viaggi’s “Venice Link”, from a Venetian agency in the Alilaguna group.
- Alilaguna boat: a voucher for the scheduled airport boat, again supplied by Bucintoro Viaggi.
- St Mark’s and the Doge’s Palace: guided visits, often combined with the Basilica and a gondola ride.
- Gondolas: shared rides of about 30 minutes, up to 5 people per gondola.
- Lagoon: trips to Murano, Burano and Torcello.
Price comparison
Viator shows prices in the visitor’s currency, and we read them in a foreign-currency session: so the table uses direct prices as the reference and only gives figures we can compare honestly.

The point with transfers is that on Viator, as on GetYourGuide and Tiqets, the same supplier sells the same service you can also find on its own site. On an American travellers’ forum, one user reported finding a private round trip on venicelink.com for $180, against $245 one way on Viator; it is not a recent account, but the mechanism is the same. For gondolas, remember the City tariff is €90 for 30 minutes by day for the whole boat: the shared ride makes sense for solo travellers and couples.
How booking works
Viator offers a paid add-on, “Cancel for any reason” cover, bought together with the booking and itself non-refundable. The voucher arrives by email with the supplier’s meeting-point instructions. The site has a lowest-price guarantee and a loyalty scheme, Viator Rewards.
Cancellations and refunds
Viator sorts products into three categories, shown on the listing:
- Free cancellation: full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start time; after that, no refunds or changes.
- Non-refundable: no refund.
- Custom: the supplier’s rules, for example 4 or 7 days for multi-day experiences, with a 50% refund between 3 and 6 days before in the strictest version.
The deadline runs to the start time you chose, not the calendar day, and always in Venice’s time zone. If the product has no start time, the deadline is generally 23:59 two days before. There are no refunds once the experience has started, and arriving late at the meeting point can count as a no-show. The terms allow Viator to override a product’s policy at its discretion. Refunds are usually processed within 48 hours and show on your account within 5–7 working days.
Fees
The terms include no traveller fee: you pay the total price, with taxes and charges included, while any taxes payable on site must be stated by the supplier. In the United States, a class action filed recently in Massachusetts argues that Viator does not itemise service charges; the outcome is not known. The commission paid by suppliers is not published.
Reviews: why the ratings differ
This is the most important difference. On Viator, only people who booked through Viator can review. The score shown on the listing, however, also includes Tripadvisor reviews, where no booking is required. The result is visible on the same product: Bucintoro Viaggi’s shared water taxi scored 4.4 on GetYourGuide, 4.3 on Tiqets and 4.0 on Viator. None of these scores is fake: they measure different groups of travellers.
Result order needs a careful read too. The default sort takes into account suppliers’ payments to Viator, and the page says so (“revenue may affect this sort order”); featured sections carry the note that Viator earns higher commissions on the products shown.
Support and languages
Viator publishes a US phone number, a European email address and a help-centre chat, which answers first with an automated assistant. The service is presented as 24/7.
What we like and what to watch
We like: cancellation rules in clear categories, written on each listing; a wide choice of private transfers, useful for groups and awkward hours; ratings based on many reviews; transparency that commission affects result order; a published phone number.
Watch out for: ratings that mix verified and unverified reviews; local-currency prices that make comparison hard; transfers and Alilaguna vouchers you can buy directly with no intermediary; the clause letting Viator change a product’s policy.
Who it suits
Viator is useful if you already use Tripadvisor and want to read many reviews before choosing a tour, or if you need a private transfer for a group. For plain entry tickets and the airport boat, the official channel remains simpler and cheaper.
Alternatives
GetYourGuide has a similar catalogue, ratings based only on people who completed the activity and a default rule of free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
