GetYourGuide in Venice: platform review, prices and conditions

GetYourGuide is the tours-and-activities platform with the widest catalogue in Venice: guided visits around St Mark’s, boat trips to Murano and Burano, gondola rides, airport transfers. It does not only sell third-party experiences: for the Frari Basilica it is the online booking channel the basilica itself chose. Here is who is behind it, how booking works, how much more or less you pay than buying direct and how refunds work.

Who GetYourGuide is

The company running the site is GetYourGuide Deutschland GmbH, based in Berlin and registered at the Charlottenburg commercial register under HRB 132059 B. It was founded in 2009 in Zurich and later moved to Berlin; the site footer still reads “Made in Zurich & Berlin”.

GetYourGuide does not run the tours: it acts as a commercial agent for suppliers. Your contract for the service is with the local operator, named on the page as the “activity provider”. So if something goes wrong on the tour, the platform mediates, but responsibility for the service stays with whoever delivers it.

What it sells in Venice

The Venice catalogue is the largest of the platforms we examined: the airport-transfer category alone held 49 products. The main groups are these.

• St Mark’s and the Doge’s Palace: reserved-entry tickets, guided Doge’s Palace visits and combinations with the Basilica, often with the terrace or a gondola.
• Churches and museums: the Frari Basilica and guided visits that include the Gallerie dell’Accademia.
• Lagoon: trips to Murano, Burano and Torcello with a glass demonstration, shared gondola rides, boat experiences.
• Transfers: shared and private water taxis from Marco Polo airport and the Alilaguna boat.

For plain entry tickets, the official channel is almost always the place to start. The Civic Museums sell the Doge’s Palace ticket at €35, or €30 online at least 30 days ahead, and you can cancel until the day before. The Gallerie dell’Accademia state that their only authorised online reseller is TicketOne, so on GetYourGuide you will find guided visits there, not the bare ticket. Where GetYourGuide adds value is a visit with a licensed guide, combining several sites in a few hours, and free cancellation.

Transfers deserve a closer look. The same supplier, Bucintoro Viaggi, sells the shared water taxi on GetYourGuide, Tiqets, Viator and its own venicelink.com, and belongs to the group that runs the scheduled Alilaguna boat. On the platform the shared ride is rated 4.4 from more than 28,000 reviews; for a private boat, booking directly with a water-taxi consortium costs noticeably less. How booking works

You pay straight away, or choose “Reserve now & pay later” on activities that offer it: the charge then comes 72 hours before the start and, if the card fails, you have 47 hours to pay manually. Most bookings are confirmed instantly; some need supplier confirmation, with a voucher within 48 hours, and some vouchers only appear 24 hours before. You show the voucher on your phone.

GetYourGuide collects payment as an agent, so it issues only a payment confirmation, not a tax invoice: business travellers need to ask the supplier. In the app you can message the operator directly, which helps when agreeing a transfer or tour meeting point.

Cancellations and refunds

The default rule is simple: cancel more than 24 hours before the activity starts and you get a full refund; after that, or if you don’t show up, no refund. Each listing can set other rules, and there are three labels: fully refundable, partially refundable, non-refundable. Refunds go back to your payment method in 3–5 working days or, if you choose, as GetYourGuide gift cards. Be careful with those: they cannot be transferred or cashed, they expire and they are lost if you delete your account.

Two rules worth knowing. Cancellations agreed directly with the operator, outside the platform, are not refunded. And the 14-day withdrawal right does not apply to date-bound activities. If the supplier cancels, for example because of bad weather or acqua alta, you get back the price paid; any further claims go to the supplier.

Fees

The terms include no separate traveller fee. There is a commission, but the operator pays it: the supplier guide puts it at 20 to 30% of the price, depending on the country. The same terms warn that the price on the platform may be higher than what the same supplier charges elsewhere. The order of search results also depends partly on commission, which GetYourGuide states on its search pages.

Support and languages

The site and app are translated into many languages, including Italian. Support runs through the help centre, with chat, email and phone, and is presented as 24/7 and multilingual; the terms promise a reply usually within 24 hours and at most within 48. During an activity, the quickest route is the in-app chat with the supplier.

Reviews and track record

Only people who booked and completed the activity can review. The score gives more weight to recent reviews, and reviews mainly about the booking process or customer support may be removed: scores describe the tour, not the platform.

In the Colosseum ticketing case (PS12603), the Italian Competition Authority fined GetYourGuide Deutschland GmbH €5.6 million over the automated purchase of tickets resold in pricier bundles. According to press reports, the Lazio regional administrative court upheld the fine. The case concerns Rome.

What we like and what to watch

We like: the widest range of guided visits and lagoon trips; a clear default rule with free cancellation up to 24 hours before; “Reserve now & pay later”; in-app chat with the supplier; no separate fee.

Watch out for: private transfers cost a lot more than booking a water-taxi consortium directly; plain entry tickets rarely beat the official channel; gift-card refunds come with strings; no invoice from the platform; search order is influenced by commission.

Who it suits

GetYourGuide is the most convenient choice if you want a small-group guided visit, an islands trip or a particular activity and want to be able to cancel until the day before. It suits less for plain tickets and private transfers, where the direct channel costs less.

Alternatives

Tiqets is stronger on entry tickets and sells the Civic Museums at the official price. Viator has a similar catalogue of tours and transfers, with cancellation rules in three categories. If you want a private guide, you can go to the city’s licensed guides, listed with their rates on the operators page.

Verdict

For guided tours, lagoon trips and experiences, GetYourGuide is the most complete platform in Venice, with clear cancellation rules and no hidden fees. For plain entry tickets and private water taxis, though, always compare with buying direct: it is usually cheaper.
